Look twice at your tax return!

Tax season has come and gone, however, there are many people who have filed extensions this year and have yet to file their tax returns.  If you are one of those individuals, make sure to check your tax return carefully for any errors.  Here are five steps you should take before filing:

  1. Names – All names should match the spelling on your Social Security card.
  2. ID Numbers – Verify that all Social Security numbers are correctly entered for yourself, spouse, and dependents.
  3. Withholding – Make sure that this is the correct amount for all W-2’s, 1099’s, etc.
  4. Account numbers – Verify that your bank account number and routing number are correct.  The IRS cannot help you if you use the wrong number and someone else gets your money.
  5. Form 1040 – While it may sound obvious, make sure to review page 1 and 2 of the Form 1040 and verify what the source of income, deduction, or credit is from.
