Davis & Hodgdon Announces Retirement of Founding Partner John W. Davis

The Davis & Hodgdon Advisory group has announced the retirement of Founding Partner John W. Davis, CPA, CFP®, PFS, CVA, CEPA. Since founding the firm more than 30 years ago Davis has inspired colleagues, devotedly served clients, and made a lasting impact on the community with his personal and professional efforts.
Originally from Pennsylvania, John graduated from the University of Vermont in 1978. In 1990, he founded John Davis and Associates CPAs, and with the addition of Bret Hodgdon, CPA, CFP®, CFE, CGMA, as a partner in 2005 the firm was renamed to Davis and Hodgdon Associates. In 2015 Davis led the firm’s merger with a Rutland-based accounting firm representing a significant opportunity to serve clients with an extensive range of services and expanded talent pool.
As the tax practice thrived, so did increased demand for the firm’s financial planning services. The firm differentiated themselves as independent, fiduciary, fee-only wealth advisors, and in doing so rebranded its financial advisor services as an affiliated and separately registered entity, Copper Leaf Financial. In 2021 Copper Leaf moved from state registration to registration with the SEC further differentiating itself as a fiduciary advisor firm.
In 2016 the firm launched a formal package of accounting and bookkeeping services to address the needs of overwhelmed entrepreneurs and their growing businesses. The services were referred to as RAD (Remote Accounting Department) and then renamed to Convergent Accounting during a firm-wide rebranding initiative in 2021.
Davis has been an active member of Vermont community throughout his career. He is a member of the South Burlington Rotary, and previously served as the Vice Chair of the Vermont Economic Progress Council (VEPC). John has also been a board member of the Vermont Employee Ownership Center (VEOC), and treasurer and member of the executive committee for Age Well.
While John looks forward to retirement he intends to act as an Advisor to the firm on a limited basis. Davis’s transition into retirement began in 2020 when Hodgdon took the reigns as Managing Partner and now looks forward to maintaining the Firm’s core values and vision.
