How local nonprofits keep on keeping on

From the Burlington Free Press:

United Way of Chittenden County Executive Director Martha Maksym said the first real mistake anyone could make is to think that philanthropy could fill the gap in funding that nonprofits are experiencing caused by sequestration and Medicaid rollbacks.

“Nonprofits will not be able to fix this alone,” Maksym said. “We won’t be able to fundraise our way out of this. Keep in mind, these nonprofits are businesses that employ a lot of people.”

While local nonprofits chug along in light of these federal cuts, and with more people knocking on their doors, repercussions of the 2007 economic recession are still reverberating through their tight budgets.
